Apple’s Touchscreen MacBook Pro Starts at $2,899: What Comes With the New Display
Apple’s new MacBook Pro brings Touch to the Mac for the first time, but this is a new hardware purchase, rather than a touchscreen feature arriving on existing laptops through macOS. Announced October 28, the PROLED XDR models open for pre-order now and become available November 6.

The entry price buys a specific configuration
The 14-inch model with M5 Pro starts at $2,899 in the U.S.; the 16-inch M5 Pro model starts at $3,399. Choosing M5 Max raises those starting prices to $4,499 and $4,799 respectively. The differences are $1,600 for the smaller model and $1,400 for the larger one, before considering any other configuration choices.
Apple’s announcement also lists up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage. Those are configurable maximums across the range, not a description of what the $2,899 laptop contains. Check the chosen processor, memory and storage together before comparing a checkout price with the headline.
What is physically different
The tandem OLED panel has two self-illuminating pixel layers, and the touch sensor is built into the panel. Apple says the display can reach 2,000 nits peak HDR and SDR brightness, with a variable refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not establish independently measured performance in every room or application.
Touch works alongside the keyboard and trackpad. Apple says macOS translates touches into clicks for many existing apps, while updated gesture APIs allow developers to design more specific interactions. That supports ordinary tapping immediately without promising that every professional application has already acquired a complete touch-oriented interface.
The smaller display measures 14.2 inches and the larger one 16.3 inches. Apple puts the laptops at 3 and 4 pounds respectively. For someone choosing between sizes, screen area and carrying weight are separate trade-offs from the processor decision.
Software timing still needs a separate check
Apple describes Touch workflows in Creator Studio, including onscreen musical instruments in Logic Pro and selecting clips in Final Cut Pro. Our Creator Studio update breakdown explains the November software rollout and its different platform requirements. A compatible new screen does not make a future app update arrive early.
External-display support also depends on the chip: Apple specifies up to three external displays with M5 Pro and up to four with M5 Max. Both models include three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe and a headphone jack.
For iPhone photographers, Apple says its Color Matching Function 2026 provides a consistent viewing experience with iPhone 18 Pro and Studio Display XDR. That is a specific pairing claim, not a promise that every older iPhone display will match automatically.
The practical buying question is which part of this combination solves a current task. Touch needs the new panel; app-specific tools need the relevant software; and the largest memory, storage and display configurations need their own price check.
